Do you have any suggestions on long term positive thinking?
I just finish Russell Simmons book "Do You!" It was awsome. I was very inspired by it. I've also started reading "The Secret" Both books stresses the power of positive thinking and the mind being very powerful. I've trying to be positive and so far it's going pretty well. I'm just afraid that it want last long. I guess that's a negative thought I shouldn't be thinking. =) I was looking for some advice on how to have long term positive thinking and having a positive attitude. I'm trying to recondition mind and the way I think. Any good tips?

1. You need to recognize what it is that occurs when you begin to have negative thinking, where you are and what you are doing, then limit these oppurtunties. Also, when they occur label them very quickly so you will recognize them easier the next time.
2. I am positive the past is past and I am positive I can only plan and wonder about the future. The only thing I can do is what ever I do right here and right now, and of that I am positive.
3. "Well" i will say coming from a "negative" family who see's the dark in everything you do or attempt to do; I decided to turn things around and do things opposite from my family, That way i won't be dissapointed. Positivity has power "but" You must put forth the effort and sometimes it pisses you off "but" i'm a firm believer in "positivity" Because it does work. "So" that's a good question to ask because the last thing i want to hear is "I can't do this; "or" "I can't do that; Because i came from "here" or "there" Because it really does depress our society of children out there "And" being told these things as a child really put a damper on things and it was horrible to even tell your children these things" But; I learned one damn thing i was not going to tell my children those things because of the "long term" effects it would have on them and everyone around them." It made me sadly depressed and made feel worthless and caused me years of unhappiness and drug and alcohal abuse "Sad to say" I did learn things though growing up "Like the drums and drawing" But' because everybody around me told me i would'nt do well in those things because i did'nt live in California it really put me in a place of a screeching halt. Eventhough i still went ahead and did them as i do today."
Now i find myself going back after those things i longed for.
4. I have heard the book by Russel Simmons is really good. I have not had a chance to read it. But to answer your question, "Keep yourself around Positive People."
Learn to love yourself, appreciate yourself, value your needs and boundaries...
However, if this does not help...then you may find it helpful to talk to someone face to face, ie. a counselor because folks around are sometimes not honest, fearing they will hurt our feelings and/or may not know everything that is going on in ones life. Counseling also helps one get their feelings out without being judged and get to the root of why one feels negative. "Good" Counselors are trained professionals in helping individuals reach a deeper part of themselves and do some honest sel-reflection.
5. having a positive attitude and think positively is not about all positive thoughts all the time. it is about changing negative ones into positive ones. it is about looking for the proverbial silver lining. look for something good no matter how small in everything.
write down or recall the good things that happened to you during the day. granted you need some time to write them but if you write them it makes it more concrete and gives you something to look back at if you are feeling negative.
try to be around other people who are trying to keep a positive attitude because it will make it easier for you to be positive.
remember every day is a journey. if you start getting a negative attitude and focusing on the negative in situations try to turn it around. be gentle and loving toward yourself and realize it is a work in progress. some days it is easier to be positive than others. also, some people seem to be optimistic naturally whereas for others it takes more work.
they say the more you try not to think of something the more you will think of it. if you try not to think negative thoughts you might find yourself having lots of negative thoughts. allow them to be that is be aware of them say that is a negative thought. but then look for the positive in the situation.
some examples: negative situation: a fight with a loved one. the positive side: it lead to a good conversation and increased understanding. negative situation: cannot find a job. the positive side: able to spend some time with family who live far away without having to worry about fitting it in around one's work schedule.
best wishes!
