Positive thinking movement similar to doublethink in Orwell's1984?

Positive thinking tells us to control what we focus on, forgoing negative thoughts for positive ones.

Doublethink, anyone?

An example: the chocolate rations in Oceania are lowered, but the people trick themselves into believing they have been raised. Positive thinking.

The real question is, what's more important? Being successful or thinking you are? Imagination or reality?

1. Positive thinking does not involve the exclusion of all negative thoughts, it however, as you said, encourages a focus on positive happenings.

In '1984', the people are tricked by Big Brother, they do not trick themsleves. However there is an interesting link between positive thinking and a way of having an internal Thought Police - policing your own thoughts, not other peoples.

2. I think you're spot on, and I don't think its a good thing. However, I can understand why people do it. I just think it would be better for them to actually see the positive in the world around them or effect change rather than not see it and force themselves to create it in their head.
