Will consciously thinking positive ever become an unconscious action?

Supposing there's someone who is constantly thinking negative thoughts. He goes to a psychiatrist who then tells him to kill the ANTs (automatic negative thoughts) and begins to consciously detect his negative thoughts and turn them into positives. Is this an ongoing task that he must do? Or at some point will it stick and he won't have to consciously detect his thoughts and it will just come naturally?

1. I am guessing that over time, the new positive affirmations will become almost inherent too the person, though I think this would take a pretty long time, since most situations concerning ANTs have taken place over many years for that person, maybe since childhood.

2. Yes, thought patterns can be altered. Yes, with work and attention it will stick and come naturally.

3. I think it will become an automatic response eventually. When you make it a habit, it'll just come easier. Just like how I always make my bed as soon as I get up in the morning. I used to have to remind myself, and some days I'd forget, but now I just do it without even thinking.
