What is the likelihood that depression and severe mood swings are the result of Ritalin?
I have done some research and have discovered that, when taken over a short period of time, Ritalin has depression as a "less common" side effect but, when taken over a longer period of time, depression is a more common side effect. The person who is currently using Ritalin is a boy so his mood swings are not the effect of PMS. What is the likelihood that depression and mood swings are the result of taking Ritalin? Is it rational to connect the two?

1. Ritalin is a stimulant. It will lift you up and drop you down. For some, it burns out hyper-activity to leave the person calm. for others? It's a roller-coaster.
If you take ritalin, get all energetic for awhile, and then crash, you could very well feel depressed as you crashed. And then while you were all energetic before, the combination would result in mood swings.
So the likelihood is high.
2. Antidepressants like Ritalin and Paxil may cause some distressing and harmful side effects (see http://www.paxilbirthdefectlaw.com/paxil-side-effects/). Also, immediately consult a physician for any doubts and discomforts that may arise upon taking your medication. He/she may provide safer alternatives on how to deal with your health complaints.
