My depression is getting to the point where I'm not myself anymore, I wear a mask to make others happy, but I'm so tired of pretending to be okay. When I'm not. Why would you treat depression with drugs? I understand that there are a very small number of people who's depression is completely linked to chemical imbalances. However, I have been depressed and it wasn't because some chemicals were messed up in my brain; it was because my life sucks. How can I handle depression without drugs? OK, I am coming to terms with the fact that I am indeed depressed. I need to make some changes, but don't want to take anti-depressants. I am already on meds for migraines, and don't want to take more. I sleep a lot, have lost interest in just about everything, have gained weight, lost self esteem, lost motivation to do anything. I don't want to work, don't want to shop, don't want to do anything except lay there like a log. I can hardly get myself up on the weekends. What can I do to stop this cycle before it gets worse, and demands medical attention? I want ways that are alternatives to prescription drugs. Or illegal ones. I am going to be 35 next month, female, married, no kids.
How can I 'cure' my depression without drugs? OK. I have given a lot of thought to the idea of experience, life & what depression means in the very recent past. I have decided ultimately that I can't handle simply submitting to the depression, because while I like the viewpoint I know it holds me down - but also I can't do the drug route. I just can't, it doesn't work, it makes me uncomfortable and ultimately more anxious & depressed. And you know, really, I can't do the therapy route, either, because you have no idea how uncomfortable that makes me, as well. I cannot and could not ever in any situation since I was born successfully express my true self verbally & I'm not suddenly going to sprout an ability to eloquently describe my emotions. Not to mention I have an embarrassing inclination to cry and it all just snowballs into this slightly traumatizing experience that I don't like. I really don't like. Therefore, I was wondering what alternative solutions there are for depression without just masking it with medication? And really, don't even say therapist or psychologist because my dad is one and he's done things to me that make me really not trust that whole... You know. I just can't. I mean, I have a hard enough time going to psych CLASS, I cannot deal with a psychologist. I'm not trying to say I can do it alone, but I have friends and family who I can trust. I just can't do the therapy thing or the drug thing, I really can't. I know that sounds weird and paranoid but I have my reasons and I can't. I have, indeed, actually been diagnosed with depression. And I have, indeed, previously been on medication for it. I've done all of that. I'm looking for something new but I'm also trying not to spill my whole history to you all which is why I've been a little scant.
Can someone with undiagnosed depression recover naturally without drugs or treatment? Someone who was depressed for any amount of time from a few months to two years shall we say - if their depression went undiagnosed, would it be possible for them to make a natural recovery through a change in social environment/circumstances, without ever having seen a professional or receiving drugs or treatment? What's the best way to handle depression without drugs? Lately I've been in a deep depression, this is the second time it's been this bad. The first time I went to the doctor and got prozac...but it caused me to have no sex drive, my boyfriend at the time didn't like that so I quit taking it. And now I'm just going through it all again and I don't want to take anything for it. I exercise regularly, I eat really healthy and I just don't know what else to do to help with it. Anything helps. Thanks!
Do you think it is wise to treat depression with drugs? I was talking to a monk about my depression. He said if i exercised eat healthy and helped other people (volunteer work etc) it would help my depression greatly. I explained to him depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and thats why drugs are useful. His logic is why would you treat a chemical imbalance by introducing more chemicals? what do you think? p.s my depression is pretty severe, i dropped out of medical school, ive lost 35 pounds and i have completely isolated myself
What's your opinion regarding current drugs used for depression and schizophrenia ? I mean I sometimes feel like the only effect of those medicines that is visible on patients is the sedative or (narcotic) effect . I sometimes doubt the exact mechanisms of the respective illnesses are addressed by these drugs , and their use is mainly directed at producing a generally quiet state in the patient , in a way that is so inaccurate that is reminiscent of electric shock therapy . Do you ever have the same feeling ? Why don't antipsychotics reverse schizophrenia and result in the person having a normal quality of life , like antidepressants sometimes do for depression patients ? Don't you think there obviously is more to the problem than a mere " chemical imbalance " , that causes one to be excessively sad , angry , paranoid , unreactive etc ?? Bear in mind I said " I feel " , meaning it is an impression . I am familiar with the traditional neurotransmitter abnormality explanation . However I can't say that I have seen many people with schizophrenia who benefitted from pharmacotherapy . In fact , I know 2 sisters who killed themselves in spite of being on treatment . I also remember one young man who presented with paranoia and violent tendencies , I saw him when he was brought in , then I saw him next day , with part of the hair on his head shaved after he had ECT , it was SCARY , the guy was walking around like a zombie , drooling and with a vacant look on his face . I began to have serious doubts about both the diagnosis standards and the treatment . For example , I failed to comprehend exactly how these people were organically ill , since many of their complaints were common to any person who has been through stressful or painful events in life , although in less severe forms .
What are some alternative drugs for depression? I am in a postition where i can no longer smoke marijuana. I have used it in the past for anxiety and depression in small doses and have never had to go to the doctor for any other perscription. Any advise? Thanks.
Is the lethal nature of some antidepressant drugs enough to cure depression itself? "A persistent decline in the rate of Americans, especially children, newly diagnosed with depression followed the first federal warning on risks connected with antidepressant drugs, a study suggests." So they diagnose fewer people now to keep them off the drugs because they might make them commit suicide, why would they eliminate the term when they can't treat it? What does that say about the pharmaceutical industry in America?
